Braintree Payment Tokens

Challenge

FashionableCanes.com offers an extensive collection of stylish walking canes and walking sticks for both men and women.  They sell their products online and use Braintree for their online payment processing.  Each order placed online has a credit card authorization hold which is good for 72 hours.

Most of their orders are shipped within the authorization hold period, but there are orders requiring some level of customization which require more than 72 hours to customize and ship.  After the authorization hold expires, these orders require the use of a payment token from Braintree in order to charge the customer’s credit card to complete the sale and capture payment for the order.

The order management system they use does not capture the payment token when placing an authorization hold for a sale.  Each time an order’s authorization hold expires, a staff member must go out to Braintree, look up the order, then copy and paste the payment token to the customer’s payment file so that FanshionableCanes.com can charge and collect payment.

The manual process for gathering payment tokens is time intensive and prone to error.  Some orders were shipped without payment because the authorizations expired, and simply overlooked.  The high cost of staff time and unpaid orders reached a point where FashionableCanes.com realized they needed a way to automate the payment token capture process to reduce staff time and losses from shipping unpaid orders.

Solution

We created an integrator for Braintree that checks for payment tokens every 10 minutes (user selectable).  FashionableCanes.com decided that since none of the payments have a payment token then the Braintree integrator would retrieve payment tokens for all transactions.  The integrator runs every 10 minutes 24/7/365 automatically retrieving payment tokens for every online order.

REST API, XML SQL, and MS SQL Server technologies were used for this project.

Bottom Line

Automating the payment token capture process is one less concern for FashionableCanes.com’s staff allowing them to focus on other aspects of their day-to-day business operations.  This project is good example where automating is the right answer and best course of action.
